Where Will the Opposition Come From?

As the American Political System transforms, evolves, and moves forward there is however a wasteland where failed ideas, opinions, strategies, and politicians are cast aside. That wasteland contains many notables such as Richard Nixon, Ross Perot, and Spiro T Agnew, Mark Foley, the list is long; Hillary Clinton’s original health plan; the original Iraq War Strategy, and a viable third party in US politics, all seemed at the time to be well thought out and possibly successful, but were later discredited. Well that junkyard is about to get some more scrap heap in the way of political strategy and methodologies, politicians, and political obstructionist if the 2008 presidential election goes the way it is going two days prior to the election.

As the election season draws to a close with the possibility of major change in the air, a change that the electorate hungers for, a change that could grant ruling party status in both the executive and legislative branches of our government. The American electorate hungers for an effective government, a responsive government, and an efficiently run government so it seems to be flexing its power in this election cycle by this authority to the Democratic Party. The Electorate seems to have matured and transformed and does not fear the prospects of a Democratic President and a Democratic majority Congress.

The electorate also hungers for effective and responsive opposition. But to the American Electorate, opposition is not obstruction. For years the electorate has witnessed our government paralyzed by the obstructionist processes of our political institutions which have caused deterioration of our political institutions and its operations. The opposition view can be best described using the table view principle. Place objects on a square table and seat a person at each end of the table. Ask each to draw and describe what they see on the table. The responses you receive will be different. Why, because each person will have a different viewpoint of the table. In some cases the responses could be the same depending on what is seen and how it is viewed. The importance is that viewpoints are not right or wrong (left or right) but necessary in order to understand the makeup of the table. The most complete picture is in the combination of all of the viewpoints of the table.

For 30 – 40 years it has been chic to define opposition as being obstructionist even manifesting itself in our media where several news organizations have willingly participated in this strategy. The definition of opposition is not the person or group whose focus is resistance, combat, antagonism, and hostility. It is the person or group that provides the opposing view designed to ensure that a more complete view is attained at all times. The value of the opposition party is to present those viewpoints that are different from the dominant party to ensure the complete picture. The American Electorate has transformed and it defines opposition far differently than the media and certainly the McCain campaign defines it.

Those practicing obstruction strive to IMPEDE, DELAY, BLOCK, and UNDERMINE the political process as with the use of the filibuster as a weapon rather than a tool in a Congress that isn’t veto-proof. Because the definition of opposition has changed, the electorate doesn’t fear the possibility of a veto-proof Congress because it has seen the stalemates for many years in our political institutions and find them no longer acceptable. Opposition is not the action of Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh, Pat Buchannan, and Bill O’Reilly, these are obstructionists whose actions do not bring value to the smooth execution of the government process but seeks to undermine differing viewpoints causing chokepoints in our government. It is safe to say that attempts to undermine any possible Obama presidency are underway in full swing.

So where is that opposition going to come from? Do you get the sense that it will not come from the current Republican Party? A party with a clear leadership vacuum; A party that has demonstrated that it does not understand transformation; A party that refused to refine the strategy and messages that were being delivered during this election cycle; A party that went in with a strategy to discredit Barack Obama at all levels, from the presidency down to local campaigns. Their message and party was rejected by the greater electorate but they stuck to it even to the point where it seems as if they are about to ride it over a cliff. Colin Powell described this strategy and the message as nonsensical.

The leadership failings of the current Republican Party are dramatic. This leadership vacuum allowed the selection of Sarah Palin as the VP candidate when there were numerous qualified individuals available for nomination. The Republican Party does not realize the size of the hole that was dug here. The electorate overwhelmingly rejected Sarah Palin and what will the other qualified individuals who were not selected do? They will in 4 years ask us to consider casting our vote for them. However, none of these individuals will be able to convince the electorate that they are worthy because in this year’s election they were deemed to be less qualified than Sarah Palin, who is perhaps the most embarrassing and least qualified candidate ever.

So where will our opposition politics come from?

Judging from this year’s response to Ralph Nader is he still effective?

Should the Republican Party have a Come-to-Jesus, evaluate itself, perhaps change, split, or just dissolve?

There could be a ray of hope out there. Over the past several weeks we’ve seen numerous Republicans and conservatives come out in support of Barack Obama. Many of those endorsements could be considered protest endorsements but for the majority most were the results of well thought-out analysis and presented in a manner that was professional and respectful of our political system. These endorsements have come from individuals, groups, and organizations.

So where are the seeds of our parliamentary and social opposition for the next governing cycle?

So let’s explore?

Michael Smerconish, a registered Republican and conservative talk radio host broke with 28 years of personal tradition and decided to endorse Barack Obama. In the era of political party allegiance this is a mortal sin as witnessed by the amount of messages disagreeing with his decision and choice. But could there be a silver lining in Mr. Smerconish’s action? I think so. Mr. Smerconish two days prior to Mr. Conlin Powell’s endorsement of Barack Obama released the results of the analysis that led him to his decision. His analysis included several categories of interest, such as leadership, analytical abilities, foreign policy, etc. It was an extremely detailed analysis and I’m sure that Mr. Smerconish knew that he would encounter allegiance issues if he were to accept the conclusions of his analysis and endorse Mr. Obama. But Mr. Smerconish demonstrated leadership and strength and did what was required of him in supporting the best solution.

So Michael Smerconish had an America First Moment (AFM), defined as behaving in a manner that takes into consideration the effects of personal behavior and decisions on the American Community prior to acting. Michael’s willingness to consider the American Community was a true America First Moment. But will Mr. Smerconish have the enabling infrastructure in which to present his opposition views in the Republican Party; If not the Republican Party then where? Mr. Smerconish’s support of Mr. Obama was critical but his opposition views will be more critical.

The most visible of the cross-over endorsements was of course Colin Powell. Mr. Powell’s endorsement of Barack Obama like Mr. Smerconish’s was extremely well thought-out. He even mentioned that he toiled over his decision for months. Mr. Powell gave a comprehensive endorsement of Barack Obama. He listed his reasons in a clear, concise, and succinct manner so all could see which categories were important to him and how he arrived at this important decision

Colin Powell showed the utmost respect to our nation, and its political institutions, and to the men and women who have died granting us the opportunity to vote and some who will give their lives today in far-away lands to guarantee our rights to vote. Colin Powell did not belittle the process by standing on his front porch and shouting out his endorsement of Mr. Obama. Mr. Powell labored over this decision for many months by spending the time researching and analyzing the behavior and character of both candidates and only then did he arrive at his decision. This type of analysis was lost on Tom Brokow, Pat Buchannan, and Rush Limbaugh who entertained the thought that his decision was based on race. Mr. Powell’s actions were clearly an American First Moment!

So Mr. Powell becomes another possible opposition because he has emphatically stated that he remains a Republican and if the Republican Party survives it will be important for Mr. Powell to be a key voice of opposition.

We now visit the media as a voice of opposition. Barack Obama has dominated media endorsements. We focus on many which are well known as conservative and have endorsed Republican candidates in recent elections:

1.       The Denver Post

2.       The Chicago Tribune

3.       Austin American-Statesman

4.       The Salt Lake Tribune

5.       Wisconsin State Journal

6.       Houston Chronicle

It is the Houston Chronicle that we will focus on because the endorsements of the other newspapers followed the same analysis that was so detailed in the Houston Chronicle. The Houston Chronicle known as a conservative media outlet, analyzed several categories of concern prior to reaching a decision: VP Choice; Terrorism; Economy; Opportunity; taxes, Healthcare; Social Concerns; Intellect and temperament; Ability to build coalitions; Foreign Policy; Analytical thinking; etc. In all cases with the exception of terrorism the Houston Chronicle arrived at the conclusion that Barack Obama was the most capable candidate.

Opposition will demand that a substantial portion of our news media offer vigilance over a possible one rule government. As long as the opposition being presented is the different viewpoints of the problem space then the American Public will benefit substantially and the media could be an important enabling infrastructure and platform for the presentation of opposition views.

Once again, opposition in the media is not the actions of Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh, Pat Buchannan, and Bill O’Reilly. Obstructionism will not find a place in the politics of our future. Our media should be finding ways to enable opposition viewpoints now and not ways to enable the undermining of our government institutions.

This is just a small analysis of the potential opposition resources that could play a key role in our future governing body. There are many other possible voices such as well known conservatives like Christopher Buckley, members of the Goldwater family, and others who will have to find or provide the enabling infrastructure in which to present opposition views especially if the Republican Party fails to transform itself.

Regardless, on November 5, 2008 when the RENAISSANCE begins, our government will not operate as it has in the past and each of us will have a responsibility to ensure its success. The difference will come in those who will take ownership!

The Politics Of Poximity Part Two (lets have some fun today)

Were we ever bombarded with the politics of proximity last week? You will recall that the politics of proximity is this neat campaign strategy that employs the following supposition:

Ego sum propinquus proinde ego sum — (I’m close therefore I am).

Whether it is Palin viewing Russia from Alaska therefore she has foreign policy experience; McCain parachuting into Washington DC to be in the proximity of financial bailout negotiations therefore he has leadership experience; or as Colbert so rightly put it, Sarah Palin standing on her front porch viewing the moon therefore she is qualified to be an astronaut.

Normally, the McCain campaign uses this strategy for their actions but that all changed last week when they started using it against Barack Obama. Barack Obama has been near William Ayers therefore he aids and abets terrorists. And don’t give me any excuses! Who cares if Barack was only eight years old when Ayers was running around bombing things? Barack should have known better! He should have immediately run and gotten a hall pass from his parents and jumped on his big wheel and peddled his little butt over to the Pentagon and stopped Ayers in his tracks. That little Slacker! Yea that one! (thanks Stephanie)

But that clever McCain took the politics of proximity one step further. He actually employed a reverse pivot move. I tell you these guys in the McCain campaign are getting good. After spending almost two weeks associating Barack with that Domestic Terrorist, Ayers, McCain ended up whipping his following into frenzies the like you only see in Sarah Palin’s church when they are speaking in tongues. Those crowds this week coming out to see John and Sarah were mumbling and shouting strange words and phrases like, “kill him”, “off with his head”, “traitor”, “terrorist”, etc. John knowing that if they kept that up they were going to have to rent a coliseum and some lions.
So here is where the reverse pivot comes in. John had to show that he is not a part of this frenzy so he and his campaign (it is really stretching, to call this a campaign) employs several attendees to act out some scripts with him so he would appear NOT to be near (the reverse move) this debauchery. John, do a better job rehearsing next time. I’m sure the dear old lady made good use of the $35 you gave her to say that Barack was an Arab. That’s a lot of bingo games for her.

Okay I’ve provided the video of the incident below when you look at it pay close attention to how McCain simply takes a nap during the skit. When he wakes up he is clearly off cue and ends up making the dear old lady look bad. So here is the exchange between Dear Old lady (DOL) and Grandpa McCain (GM).

Here is the text:

DOL: I can’t trust Obama!

DOL: I have read about him!

DOL: And he’s not…

DOL: he’s not….

DOL: he’s aaaa…

DOL: aaaaa…

(Grandpa McCain has clearly dozed off at this point. Will someone wake him up please?)

DOL: He’s an Arab!

(Grandpa is totally sleep here and should be responding…. Dear Old Lady knowing something isn’t right just goes ahead and recites her next line. God bless her soul.)

DOL: He’s Not?

(ahhh Dear Old Lady…. McCain didn’t say anything to you.)

(Grandpa now wakes up and remembers that he is in this scene. Takes the mic and now starts reciting his lines)

GM: No

GM: No Ma’am

GM: No Ma’am

GM: He’s a decent family man, citizen, Zzzzzzz, Zzzzzzz, Zzzzzzzz

McCain, if you’ve going to script something at least rehearse. That was my Aunt you made look bad.

I tell you I use to refer to the McCain campaign as a 3-ring circus it is clear that this campaign has dissolved into the trash it is. I fully expect to start seeing skin being flashed soon when things really get bad. McCain has already teased us with the idea of Cindy competing in the Miss Buffalo Chip contest.

Can we just shut them down now please?

These debates are a joke! We the electorate is not learning anything new from the candidates using this format; as a matter of fact they are beginning to impact the candidates in a negative manner. The MEDIA has struggled mightily over the last 10 years to find its IDENTITY and VALUE in this new age of INFORMATION and KNOWLEDGE SHARING brought about by the INFORMATION RENAISSANCE. After many years of having the responsibility of SHAPING PUBLIC OPINION, the media has not adjusted easily to the loss of this role. This inability of the media to transform itself has created a VACUUM that has become debilitating to the media and a waste of time for public access to relevant information.

The media has not done a good job PLANNING and EXECUTING these debates. The stuff we heard from the candidates last night is the same stuff that we’ve heard from the candidates in the last debates, in their campaign speeches, and other information sources. It is ridiculous to believe that Tom Brokow and NBC had all of this time to prepare for last night’s debate and supposedly a pool of several million questions. So the best that they could do was to choose the SAME OLD QUESTIONS to elicit the SAME OLD ANSWERS. Both NBC and Tom Brokow should be ashamed of the debate put on last night.  The inability of the debate moderators to control the debate environment, preventing the candidates from taking over and ANSWERING the QUESTIONS the QUESTIONS that they CAN answer and not the QUESTIONS that were asked, is simply awful.

Let’s cancel the last debate for next week. I can’t begin to believe what they are going to ask these guys next week. What questions are they going to ask them that are going to be different? These shenanigans need to be STOPPED immediately. It’s ridiculous that we are involving the Electorate in this waste of time. The MEDIA just like the McCain campaign are LOST. Neither has a clue on how to transform themselves in the light of the new age of politics that we are now in. They missed the start of the political renaissance that began in this country approximately 6 to 7 years ago. The success of the Obama campaign is indicative of a campaign that understands that there is a political renaissance afoot and it is the only campaign that has demonstrated changes needed to successfully execute in this NEW AGE of politics.

The complete and utter failures of the McCain, Clinton, Giuliani, and Edwards’s campaigns are testament to the fact that ignorance of this change in American Politics is systemic. One would have expected that the Romney campaign would have been a formidable competitor to the Obama campaign; however, Romney is saddled with a party constrained by the single issue voter bloc of the religious right. Romney’s enterprise thinking and Obama’s transformation initiatives are the only campaigns that should be competing at this stage in the election season.

The failure of the media is appalling. Even with its tremendous access to information, knowledge, and shaping it too has not come to understand this political renaissance. How else can you explain why we are still faced with such dinosaurs as Pat Buchanan, Tom Brokow, opinion shows, Sean Hannity, round tables, Wolf Blitzer, Charlie Gibson, etc? All of these guys were very good journalist and political analyst in their day but they haven’t transformed to meet the challenges of this new age of politics. It is time for the news media to realize that it still plays a key role as an ENABLER to the public in making informed decisions but it does that by its capability to deliver timely, accurate, and responsive information and access. It no longer holds the role of SHAPING PUBLIC OPINION at least not in the manner in which it was done before.

It is time to stop the bleeding. It is time to stop the bleeding that is occurring in the McCain campaign. John McCain’s campaign is not a campaign shaped to compete in the new age of politics. It is crippled because it finds itself defending political attitudes that have long sense gone by the wayside. Attitudes that contribute no VALUE in solving the problems our political systems face. The only chance that the Republican Party had was Romney. It is time to stop the bleeding that is occurring in the Media because it is out of touch, hasn’t retooled, and it is starting to become a caricature of itself.

Be advised Media, our Economic and Social Systems are in a renaissance period also.

On Oct 6, 2008 the American people were treated to a very scary and dangerous image of a public official standing on a stage and basically saying that discrimination and hatred is okay in a country that is trying to regain its soul and start healing itself from the failures of the last several years. John McCain and his campaign recently spoke of its new campaign strategy of casting doubt on Barack Obama’s character by trying to show associations between him and individuals such as William Ayers a member of the Weather Underground of the 60’s and 70’s, deemed a domestic terrorist organization. The goal was to paint Barack Obama as a terrorist sympathizer.

Mr. McCain’s abandonment of “Country First” to “Me First”, “Win at any cost” may have committed a very grievous error in persuading a public servant who is committed to “protect and serve” all segments of the community he was elected to SERVE. This public official is Mike Scott the Sheriff of Lee County, Florida. Officer Scott in his introduction of Gov Palin today decided to emphasize Barack Hussein Obama in a political rally that was designed to tacitly emphasize terrorist attributes and attempt to associate those attributes to Barack Obama.

It is quite shameful that John McCain coerced this public official to behave in this manner and even worst, Officer Scott should never have agreed to violate his oath of protecting and serving ALL CITIZENS. No public official especially those in law enforcement should EVER engage in behavior that could be perceived as prejudicial, segregationist, racist, and outright hateful. This one dangerous incident could rekindle thoughts and visions in many of law enforcement officials who were enablers of many hateful and violent crimes that were perpetrated against citizens of this country in times not so long ago.

Remember Officer Scott, June 21st, 1964, Philadelphia, Mississippi, the lynchings of James Chaney, Michael Schwerner, and Andrew Goodman. These 3 civil rights activists could not have been successfully KILLED without the sanctuary provided by law enforcement officials who were sworn to PROTECT and SERVE ALL CITIZENS!

Remember Officer Scott, Sunday, Sept 15, 1963, The Sixteenth Street Baptist Church was BOMBED and four young girls were KILLED; Denise McNair (11), Addie Mae Collins (14), Carole Robertson (14) and Cynthia Wesley (14). The four girls had been attending Sunday school classes at the church Officer Scott. It took over 14 years to bring justice to this case Officer Scott because of the SANCTUARY provided by government officials!

You want to talk about DOMESTIC TERRORISM John McCain? That is a discussion I would love to have with you! I have on record approximately 4,736 LYNCHINGS of AMERICAN CITIZENS! 282 occurred in the state of Florida where you coerced a Senior Law enforcement official in Lee County to participant in your 3-RING CIRCUS.

You see Officer Scott, John McCain’s selfishness in winning this election drives him to do ANYTHING even compromise the integrity and diminish the confidence of citizens in you and your public office. What is sad Officer Scott is that you don’t realize how dangerous the level of your participation in that event was. Witness the statement you made when questioned as to whether you should apologize. You said, “I absolutely, unequivocally don’t regret saying it, in order to be a speaker at this event, I had to give my full name — Michael Joseph Scott — to the Secret Service, even though I’m the sheriff of Lee County. So why would I apologize? Is there some kind of double standard here where I have to give my full name, but I can’t use his?”

Officer Scott, as a protector of citizens of this country you should be constantly aware of RISKS to all citizens. Your responsibility is always being diligent of RISKS and having effective mechanisms in place to mitigate or abate those risks. No matter how strong the temptation Officer Scott you must be above the fray and not be seen as a RISK yourself.

Need I remind you that both you and John McCain are public servants? We do not approve of our public campaign funds paying for such reckless and dangerous behavior!

Mr. McCain, the reason you’re losing is because you are tactical, dangerous, erratic, and out of touch. Your campaign has never been strategic nor shown indications that it ever could. You have never given us a reason to see you as a capable leader. Just like your short-sighted view of the Iraq War in thinking it started with “Surge”, once again you’re short-sightedness has lead you to believe that DOMESTIC TERRORISM started in 70’s with William Ayers without any regard for the fact that there are some in this country who still have vivid memories of what DOMESTIC TERRORISM really is.

28 days is far too long for you and your campaign to go away, too long for us to get our country back and too long for us to get our America back. We have far too many problems in this country needing an immediate solution and you don’t seem to have the ability to articulate any plans, cost, or practical implementations of solving them, so you’ve embarked upon this extremely dangerous behavior and now you are involving law enforcement officials!

Two things should occur immediately:

  1. Governance should be put in place on public campaign funds to ensure that John McCain’s eligibility be revoked immediately if he ever convinces another public official to engage in the type of behavior that he coerced Officer Scott to engage in.
  2. Officer Scott should not apologize for participating in that event nor should he apologize for what he said. Instead, he should immediately resign his position because there are many in the public who now see him as someone who cannot prosecute his duties in a fair and equitable manner. Any lost of public trust, no matter how small, is disqualifying for a law enforcement official.
