Are we a NATION OF LAWS or a NATION OF FLAWS?

While listening to both President Obama and former Vice President Cheney speak on terror today it became clear to me what the real differences between them are. President Obama BELIEVES that this Nation, its constitution, the laws that are derived from it, and the institutions charged to interpret, develop, and enforce our laws are sound and sufficient to protect us and our nation. In short, President Obama demonstrated that he has faith in our form of government protecting us when we execute under the law.

Former Vice President Cheney on the other hand seems to BELIEVE that our constitution, the laws derived from it, and the institutions charged to interpret, develop, and enforce those laws ARE NOT SUFFICIENT to protect us and our nation. In short, former VP Cheney demonstrated skepticism towards our form of government in protecting us when we execute under the law.

In defending their viewpoints both made their arguments passionately and their belief systems were highly exposed in those speeches. This leaves us as the citizens to decide whether we want to be a NATION OF LAWS or a NATION OF FLAWS. To move beyond the stalemate in this discussion on terror, we now have clear choices, confidence or cynicism, bravery or fear, faith or disbelief, trust or skepticism, action or inaction.

Clear paths were defined in both speeches and it is up to us as citizens to choose. President Obama decomposed the argument down to its least common denominator so that all citizens could understand the decisions they must make.

What do The Republican Party, Professional Wrestling, Fox News Channel, and Rush Limbaugh all have in common?

Early in his career Rush Limbaugh repeatedly told his audience that he was a performer and an entertainer. But somewhere a line was crossed. Either his audience was too ill-equipped to understand what he meant and elevated him to a status beyond being an entertainer to that of being a leader.

Entertainment permeates all facets of our society. We like to be entertained whether its sports, news, politics, etc, we clamor for the dramas of the soup operas we were raised on. Entrepreneurs discovered many years ago that if you wrap boring things in entertainment, one could sell them in very lucrative ways. The most obvious example is the world of Sports Entertainment, a type of spectacle which presents an ostensibly competitive event using a high level of theatrical flourish and extravagant presentation, with the purpose of entertaining an audience. The primary service provided by Sports Entertainment is the performance. Commonly, but not in all cases, the outcomes are predetermined. Events falling under the classification of Sports Entertainment are widely considered to be low-brow forms of entertainment.

Several news channels discovered that by making news entertaining could make it more marketable, thus the birth of News Entertainment. Then the politicians discovered Politics Entertainment. And on it goes. Some entrepreneurs have been really innovative and have been successful in integrating several forms of entertainment like News and Politics into one cohesive package. Americans like to be entertained and many are too lazy to do the requisite research to develop informed and rationale opinions. Is there a similarity in the audiences that follow Sports Entertainment and those that follow Politics and News Entertainment?

Some Sports Entertainment events are forms of actual sports, such as exhibition basketball with the Harlem Globetrotters Association. Others are modifications of sport for entertainment like professional wrestling provided by World Wrestling Entertainment, and roller derby which is derived from roller skating.

Within professional wrestling the term kayfabe is used to describe the portrayal of events within the industry as “real”, genuine, or not worked. Kayfabe is often seen as the suspension of disbelief that is used to create the non-wrestling aspects of promotions, such as feuds, angles, and gimmicks, in a similar manner with other forms of entertainment such as the drama in soap opera or film.

Wrestling characters are distinguished as faces and heels. Faces are heroic type characters whose personalities are crafted to elicit the support of the audience through traits such as humbleness, a hard working nature, perseverance, and reciprocal love of the crowd. Faces usually win matches on the basis of their technical skills and are sometimes portrayed as underdogs to enhance the story. Heels are antagonist type characters, villains if you will, whose personalities are crafted to elicit a negative response from the audience. They often embrace traditionally negative traits such as narcissism/egomania, unprompted rage, sadism, and general bitterness. Heels typically inspire boos from the audience and often employ underhanded tactics, such as cheating and exploiting technicalities, in their fighting strategies.

News Entertainment follows the Sports Entertainment model closely. Often what is considered news is presented in a manner which makes those watching feel as if it is genuine and real. To maintain the entertainment aspect, news stories are always presented in dramatic fashions with trumped up theatrics, villains, and heroes associated with the news story. These dramas are played out daily on channels dedicated to News Entertainment.

An indication is the proliferation of cable news opinion shows which are advertised as genuine news shows but are simply modifications of traditional newscasts for entertainment purposes. Newscasts were once media resources by which information was reported. News Entertainment shows are modified forms whereby the news acts only as a prop for entertainment. The commentator becomes the central figure and his opinions become the story and not the news that is presented.

News Entertainment can convince an average American who was just given a tax break to get out and campaign against taxes. It can convince average Americans who benefit from government programs such as Medicare/Medical to go out and campaign against government managed programs. Finally, it can convince average Americans who take mortgage interest deductions each year to lower their tax liability to campaign against tax deductions. News Entertainment is where life truly imitates the arts.

The world of Politics especially the Republican Party employs the Sports Entertainment model to create its version of Politics Entertainment. Politics Entertainment was heavily employed in the 2008 political campaign season by the Republican Party and it continues to employ it even after the election. During the 2008 political campaign Conservatives/Republicans were armed for a fierce battle with Hillary Clinton. There was no bigger villain than the wife of their archenemy, Bill Clinton. Except Barack Obama surfaced and totally rendered their strategy ineffective. They had to change the script so that Barack Obama was the villain or the heel. The entire essence of the Republican Party campaign against Barack Obama was that he was a villain and someone who could not to be trusted. This script carries forth today in their approach towards him as the President. He is a villain and not to be trusted. Even our former Vice President Cheney says so.

This script makes it extremely easy for Conservatives/Republicans to attack everything and to say no to everything because to them this is only an act in some drama between villains and heroes. Did you ever wonder why it is so easy to convince someone like Sarah Palin to say the things that she said on the campaign trail about Barack Obama? Did you wonder why it was so easy to convince a supposedly very smart and intelligent Bobby Jindal to utter the outright foolishness that he did in response to the President’s state of the union message? Do you ever wonder why it is so easy to convince someone like Michelle Bachman to ramble off the most ignorant statements ever made from an educated person? Did you wonder how the Republican Party could parade a cartoon character around called Joe the Plumber and have people believe that he was really real? Finally, did you wonder how it was so easy to convince Paul Ryan to present that ridiculous Republican Budget?

Well all of these things can happen in a play. Each of the above individuals fills a role in the Republican Party’s political drama. It is all about Politics Entertainment and the suspension of reality however our nation’s problems are real and solving them will make us uncomfortable. We cannot afford to sit around and be entertained by newsmen and politicians while our nation’s institutions continue to hell in a hand basket. I know that News Entertainers are funny and watching and listening to them is a great pastime but it is time for us to get off of our lazy tails, fix this nation, start developing individual informed opinions, and turn the TV off.

So is it safe to say that the type of individual who believes professional wrestling is real are also those who believe the messages delivered by Rush Limbaugh, the Republican Party, and newscasters from News Entertainment channels?

The clock is ticking on General Colin Powell, Tick Tock – Tick Tock!

It has been almost a week since General Colin Powell blasphemed the beast. The clock continues to tick as to when this Conservative/Republican will seek an audience with the beast so that he can genuflect, apologize, and beg for forgiveness. No Conservative/Republican is permitted to speak in defiance of the beast that manifests itself as a swine. Not even a decorated war hero like Mr. Colin Powell who implies that the Conservative/Republican movement would do better without inserting the nastiness into our public life that his brand of “entertainment” delivered by the beast does.

We recently stated that the Conservative/Republican movement is devoid of leadership in its attempt to regain prominence in the political arena. Conservative/Republicans have a long road ahead of them after selling their soul in the 80s, their hearts in the 90s, and finally their minds in the 2000s. The Conservative/Republicans movement needs a leader, but that leader must be capable of taking on the beast and destroying it. The beast will not be defeated easily and Godspeed to Mr. Powell and anyone else who chooses to do battle with such a formidable creature.

Maybe a warrior with the credentials of General Colin Powell, who was once the National Security Advisor, Commander-in-chief of the US Army Forces Command, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Educated at Marymount and George Washington Universities, served two tours of duty in war torn Vietnam, and the recipient of the Purple Heart and Bronze Star awards. The beast however only has a high school education and with an initial draft classification of 1-Y which was later changed to 4-F, I think we know that the beast would never put his life on the line for this country.

It will take someone with Mr. Powell’s credentials and more to quell the beast but that leader has not yet surfaced in the Conservative/Republican movement. Let’s hope that Mr. Powell is paving the way for this yet to be unveiled leader of the Conservative/Republican movement as the beast and his followers through their actions continue to drive us more and more to a one-party political system.

The beast has been strong of late and has quashed every attempt at changes to the Conservative/Republican message, from seasoned leadership to new potential leaders who have surfaced. The latest attempt by the irrelevant Eric Cantor who dared stand up and present a theme that was not vetted through the beast is an example. Mr. Cantor’s capitulation to the beast included the statement that his initiative was not intended to be a “listening tour” which is how it had been advertised.

Well Mr. Cantor you’re right. If you were listening you would know that; first, you must denounce the beast; second, understand that the American Public is finished with the divisiveness that has been the underpinning of the Conservative/Republican message for the last 30 years; third, understand that Americans want to work together in repairing our country and its institutions; fourth, accept the fiscal responsibility required of citizens in a financially troubled nation; fifth, cease the vindictive speech, name calling, and otherwise childish acts of constant criticism, bigotry, and obstructionism that permeates the Conservative/Republican messages and actions. Most importantly Mr. Cantor, act upon these things. Until you show willingness or demonstrate the ability to do these things your attempt at leadership remains hollow, laughable, and forever shaped by the wishes of the beast.

What the beast did to you Mr. Cantor is show that you’re not important, let alone a leader, you’re just an elected politician not an elected leader! Even Mike Huckabee made the ridiculous statement recently that, “it’s too early for the GOP to look for a leader”. My God what an idiotic thing to say. I guess they are practicing “just in time leadership” and expect it to work.

The beast is really a propagandist of the worst kind. I don’t believe that General Powell understands that he has been excommunicated from the Conservative/Republican movement. In the words of the beast, “What Colin Powell needs to do is close the loop and become a Democrat instead of claiming to be a Republican interested in reforming the Republican Party.” The beast continues, “He’s just mad at me because I’m the one person in the country who had the guts to explain his endorsement of Obama. It was purely and solely based on race.” Projection is one of the most powerful weapons in the arsenal of the beast. Projection is the tendency to ascribe to another, feelings, thoughts, or attitudes that reside in one’s own self.

It is a sad day when former Vice President Cheney says that he would rather follow Rush Limbaugh than General Colin Powell. This means that he sees Rush Limbaugh as a more capable leader than Colin Powell who we entrusted the safety of this country to for many years. What type of message does that send to our society?

Tick-Tock, Tick-Tock General Powell.

The Rebranding of the Republicans

The Republican Party as a national influential party was destroyed on 4 Nov 2008. What is left in the remnants of this once great political party is a bastion of hate, hypocrisy, vindictiveness, and ignorance. The Republican Party will never recover regardless of what Mitt Romney, Jeb Bush, Eric Cantor, Newt Gingrich, John McCain and Sarah Palin feels. No matter how many pizza parties are thrown and no matter how many tea parties are held.

What’s left in the wreckage are those who are still fighting the civil war, believers in indentured servitude and Jim Crow, Witch hunters, warmongers, torturers, non-believers in science, liars, hypocrites, and idol worshippers.

The Republican Party sold its soul to the beast in order to take control of the Legislative Branch of government in 1994, thus granting authority to the beast. After winning the election the Republicans even invited the beast to come to Capitol Hill where he sat in state and celebrated the win. The Beast manifests itself in the form of a swine and has been given a mouth in order to spew its vile, vindictiveness, hatred, and lies. Fear of the beast is rampant in those who still identify as Republican and when one steps out of line or is perceived to be out of line, he must come in front of the beast, genuflect, and kiss his ring while asking for forgiveness.

The Republican Party if it wants a comeback will have to find a leader who is willing to do battle and destroy the beast. This new leader will have to fight the beast along with his false prophets and many armies. Right now there is no Republican “leader” who appears willing to take on the beast.

Who in the Republican Party have you seen stand up and demand that the Republicans behave like adults? Who in the Republican Party have you seen stand up and tell Michelle Bachman to stop embarrassing Americans with here ignorant statements? Who in the Republican Party have you seen stand up and demand that the Republican Legislators bring value to the legislative process rather than act like sore losers and obstructionist? Who in the Republican Party have you seen speak out against the lies and distortions of the right-wing media which represents it? Who in the Republican Party have you seen speak out against the silliness of Joe Wurzelbacher (the plumber). Who in the Republican Party have you seen speak out against the risk that angry right-wingers pose to our President and most importantly, those who have to protect and guarantee his safety?

Who?

Who I ask?

Leadership doesn’t come easy. It is earned through proven instances of leading. The days of the good ole boy network, nepotism, daddy paving the way, and money guaranteeing political leadership are over. A leader leads, he doesn’t follow. The litmus test becomes, “does one follow some Republican Party script”? If so then he is not a leader.
